FWB 80

Just recently acquired a 25y.o. FWB 80 after trying the earlier mod 65 at may's U.B.C. meet so I thought I'd write a little review and a recommendation for those who are after a good target pistol without paying silly money.

The general construction is typically german, not the most attractive pistol but very well made and finished to a high standard.
The walnut grips have an adjustable palm shelf and are very nice for a right hander but not so bad that a leftie like myself can still turn in reasonable scores however I would recommend trying a r/h grip before committing to buying for the l/h shooter.

Adjusting the pistol to suit you is quite easy but do read the manual as there are quite a few adjustments, luckily I found the trigger set up to be ideal for me apart from the trigger blade position on the rail, I also set the palm shelf to suit my right hand for the double handed targets as per the U.B.C. competition criteria.
It is quite strange that the sight adjustment on german target sights works the opposite way to the usual method of bring the shot impact to the gun.The german target sight adjustments move the gun to the shot which is how target sights in archery work.

The loading of the pistol is straightforward, there is no safety catch and there is a good anti-beartrap mechanism in place but I still place the cocked action close to my side so should the mechanism fail and the gun goes off,the sidelever won't slam against the action and leave me with a thumb shaped like the pistols breech and cylinder.

Firing the 80 is a pleasure and beats all the pistols i have tried except for JefL's Steyr and it's easy to see why 65/80 owners are reluctant to part with them.
After setting the sights up with Geco match pellets, the pistol was returning single handed groups smaller than a penny at 6 yards so it seems like the shooter is the weakest link in this equation.

All in all a great pistol to start 6 yards and 10 metre pistol shooting with so if you get the chance to buy one and it is a good working order...grab it if the price is right as these pistols are a good investment.

ok you can all wake up Smilie_PDT

Andy,
Nice pistol and a good review, just when I thought I was running out of things I needed  :?
